Elizabeti's Doll

Elizabeti's Doll is about a young girl that finds a large rock to take care of as her baby. Her mother had just had a baby and she also wanted to take care of a baby.

This book is a multicultural picture book. There are bright and colorful pictures on each page that appear to be watercolor illustrations. This book shows how some cultures live in villages and they help one another out. They have a special hut that is used for cooking. They all have certain jobs that they do within the family.

I think that this is a very good example of a contemporary realistic fiction book. Everything that happens in this book can and most likely has happened in real life before. It gives a good example of the feeling a child may have when they have a new baby brother or sister.

A good motivational activity with this book is to have the children write a paragraph about an emotion that they have felt before and have them describe it. This will support good writing skills and have them understanding emotions.

Reader response questions:

1. Why did Elizabeti want to take care of a rock?
2. What is a typical toy used for kids to pretend to be a real baby in America? Compare and contrast the difference in the story to the toy American's would use.
